I struggled my way up, with a lot of help from my family and friends. But also from complete strangers. I was and am truly blessed. But many find it difficult, because they don't come across people like you and I. Let me tell you more...
When I was working as a Senior Human Resources Manager, I used to get 100's of CV's from potential candidates from across the world. One such candidates' email caught my eye. Let's call him Salim (he asked not to be identified). He was from Sri Lanka, and his parents were daily wage earners. With a lot of grit and determination they had given Salim a good education and he had graduated as an electrical engineer.
He worked for a local company, but he had very big dreams and aspirations. He wrote to me in the email that he wanted to come and work in the UAE, and had attached his CV that he had written himself.
I knew then that no recruiter would even look at his CV, because it was not 'up to the mark'. I knew he would get really frustrated searching for a job in the UAE, but would not get a call from any HR. I took it up as a challenge and wrote his CV to the high standards prevalent in the market.
I circulated his CV within a few of my networks, that got him an interview call with a company that provided electrical services in Dubai. Of course, he was passionate and knew his subject well, and was easily able to convince the HR to hire him. That was then, in 2006.
Today, he owns a company of his own in Abu Dhabi, for providing electrical services, and is doing quite well for himself. He also has his parents living with him and his family. He helps a lot of his friends back home in Sri Lanka get their CV's written from me and thus get a chance to present themselves correctly to recruiters in the GCC region.
It’s the 'Year of Giving'. Be the next Salim. Help your brother. Because it's a noble cause. I truly believe in this saying, "Give a man some fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you've fed his entire family. For Life."
Do it now! Not just this year. But every year. If Allah has blessed you with a good job or a business, then Give Back To Society!
